How a Local Tradition Tackles Hunger—And How You Can Join

Uncategorised

Each November, a unique tradition in College Station, Texas, unites the community in a fight against hunger. The annual Aggies Can Food Drive, spearheaded by Texas A&M’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), calls on sports fans and local residents to contribute canned goods or monetary donations during home games. This initiative has supported countless families for over two decades.

The Mission
The food drive aims to support the Brazos Valley Food Bank and the on-campus food pantry, 12th Can, which serve individuals under financial strain—especially during holiday months when food insecurity spikes. An observation was made that when schools close for breaks, parents often struggle to replace the meals their children typically receive at school.

Expanding Efforts
Local businesses are also stepping in to assist. Brookshire Brothers, a local store situated on George Bush Drive, has eagerly set up collection bins for donations. Additionally, they offer a $10 “Bag of Hope,” filled with pre-prepared meal ingredients, available for purchase by customers wishing to donate easily.

The Urgent Need
Representatives from the Brazos Valley Food Bank highlight the growing demands on their resources, emphasizing that even minimal donations are critical. They remind the community that all contributions, no matter the size, have a meaningful impact.

Get Involved
Enthusiastic supporters of the Aggie sports teams are encouraged to join this heartwarming campaign. Whether dropping off canned goods or participating financially, every effort brings us closer to scoring a victory over hunger.
